Holly Week As The Embodiment of God’s Nonviolent Love

Pastoral Prayer for April 2, 2023  (Focusing on Good Friday)

Please allow the words of this prayer to become your own.

Lord Jesus,

When you were on the cross, you could have found a way of escape.

But you didn’t, Lord.

You stayed and prayed for your tormentors.

You said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

They deserved payback, but on their behalf, you asked God’s mercy.

That’s how I know God is strong.

That’s how I know God is loving.

You could have lashed out in anger and self-righteousness.

But instead, you chose compassion, grace, mercy –

even for those who weren’t aware they needed it.

And that one act is still redeeming the world.

Your compassion, Jesus – what a beautiful gift!

What an amazing response of strength!

Bless me and all who follow you

with your beautiful, transforming gift of compassion today,

that we, too, may participate in your saving work in the world.

Amen.
